Trying to complete your tax return—or signing up with a new accountant—and can’t find your UTR? You’re not alone. This is one of the most common sticking points. HMRC uses a lot of different codes, and it’s easy to get them mixed up.
What is a UTR?
Your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is a 10-digit number issued by HMRC when you register for Self Assessment. It’s used to identify you as an individual taxpayer.
💡 If you’re a director of a limited company, you’ll also have a company UTR for Corporation Tax. Make sure you’re using your personal UTR when dealing with your own tax return.
