Trying to complete your tax return—or signing up with a new accountant—and can’t find your UTR? You’re not alone. This is one of the most common sticking points. HMRC uses a lot of different codes, and it’s easy to get them mixed up.

What is a UTR?

Your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is a 10-digit number issued by HMRC when you register for Self Assessment. It’s used to identify you as an individual taxpayer.

💡 If you’re a director of a limited company, you’ll also have a company UTR for Corporation Tax. Make sure you’re using your personal UTR when dealing with your own tax return.

Where to Find Your Personal UTR

If you’ve registered for Self Assessment, your UTR will appear on:

You can also log in to your HMRC Personal Tax Account to find it there.

Still can’t find it?

Call HMRC on 0300 200 3310 or use their web chat. You’ll need to verify your identity, but they can resend it to you.

Don’t have a UTR yet?

If you’ve never registered for Self Assessment, you’ll need to do that first. You can register using the online forms on GOV.UK.

📮 Tip: Use an address where you can reliably receive post—HMRC will send your UTR and other important codes by mail to the address you provide.
